Rueda, Spain - Exceptional White Wines

When it comes to Spanish wines, most people immediately think of robust reds from Rioja or bold sherries from Jerez. However, Spain has another gem in its wine portfolio that is equally deserving of attention: Rueda. Nestled in the heart of the Castilla y León region, Rueda is renowned for its exceptional white wines, which have been captivating palates around the world more intensely over the last couple of years as the demand and appreciation for vibrant and unique white wines increases amongst wine enthusiasts. More so, younger generations of wine makers are shifting to organic viticulture to protect the land and are promoting sustainable practices to maintain the vineyards for future generations to enjoy.

Location & Climate

Rueda is a wine region located in the northwest of Spain (170 KM from Madrid). It is an inland wine region located in the province of Valladolid, within the Castilla y León region of Spain. The area is known for its high-altitude vineyards and continental climate, which contribute to the distinct character of its white wines, particularly those made from the Verdejo grape.

Female Led Wines

D.O. Rueda’s wine production dates back to the eleventh century when King Alfonso VI granted the land to monasteries.  Rueda wines were the wines of the Court in times of the Catholic Kings (16th Century) in the style of Dorado and Pálido wines; these styles are still being produced in D.O. Rueda today. The production of wine gained prestige during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as one of the “Vinos de la Corte” (wines of the Court of the Castilian Kings). Now, the appellation has 79 wineries, 40%  of which have female winemakers, and over 1,580 vine-growers.

The region has over 30 female winemakers, and women in top oenology or top management positions. Many wines found in Ontario are made by female winemakers including : Bodegas Protos, Chief winemaker, Marilena Bonilla, Diez Siglos, Winemakers Laura Rubio and Noelia Santamaría, Bodegas Pandora, Rosa Zarza, Bodegas De Alberto, Beatriz González Peláez, Bodegas Gotica, Maria Jesús de la Hoz Monsalve and Bodegas Verde, Silvia García

VER-DAY-OH of Rueda

The star of Rueda is undoubtedly the Verdejo grape.  The Verdejo grape was brought to Spain in 10th century; originally originating from North Africa.  Indigenous to the region, Verdejo is known for its aromatic complexity and vibrant acidity. It often exhibits flavors of citrus, green apple, and herbs, with a characteristic hint of bitter almonds. This versatility allows Verdejo to produce wines ranging from crisp and refreshing to rich and full-bodied. Each and every year in June we celebrate national Verdejo Day.

Rueda wines are celebrated for their versatility and food pairings. A classic Verdejo is a delightful match for seafood, poultry, and fresh salads. Its crisp acidity and aromatic profile make it an excellent companion for dishes with delicate flavors. More complex Verdejos, which may undergo barrel aging, pair beautifully with richer fare such as roasted vegetables, creamy cheeses, or even grilled fish.

Sauvignon Blanc from Rueda offers a different experience, often showcasing vibrant citrus and tropical fruit notes. It pairs well with dishes like sushi, goat cheese, or tangy dressings.

Gem of a Future

Rueda continues to evolve, with many producers embracing sustainability and organic practices. The region is also seeing a resurgence of interest in indigenous grape varieties and innovative winemaking techniques. This forward-thinking approach ensures that Rueda remains at the forefront of Spanish white wine production.
